Five SmartRecruiters Job Fields Position Mapping Misses: SAP's API Workaround and Safer Integration Design

Technical update, 28 October 2026. An SAP SuccessFactors product expert published a practical SmartRecruiters integration workaround on 27 October: when standard Position-to-Job mapping does not expose certain job fields, an integration can enrich the newly created SmartRecruiters job through the public Jobs API. The proposed pattern is job.created webhook → look up authoritative values → PATCH the job. That is a useful, specific implementation technique, not a newly released native mapping capability. The original SAP Community walkthrough provides the example; the SmartRecruiters API reference confirms the PATCH endpoint.

The five fields in the SAP example

SAP's example covers Industry, Function, Experience Level, Type of Employment, and Location. These are standard job attributes, not arbitrary custom fields. The public preview of SAP KBA 3746432 separately discusses four mandatory fields that do not appear in Job Fields configuration; KBA 3772882 addresses the special treatment of Location and other standard fields. Do not read either preview as a complete field-mapping specification for every tenant or assume that all five have identical configuration rules.

Why a job can be created successfully but still need enrichment

Employee Central can remain the authoritative source for approved positions, organizational attributes and selected reference data, while SmartRecruiters owns the recruiting job and candidate process. A successful Position-to-Job creation does not guarantee that every SmartRecruiters standard job field is populated through the mapping interface. The SAP author demonstrates a post-creation update as a workaround. That is materially different from claiming that SmartRecruiters has shipped a new universal mapping feature. Compare the SAP workaround with the existing SAP field-mapping and data-sync guidance.

Recommended integration flow

  1. Create the job using the supported path. Preserve the approved SuccessFactors Position identifier and any integration correlation reference. Do not invent a job ID before SmartRecruiters creates the job.
  2. Receive the job.created event. Subscribe through SmartRecruiters' supported webhook mechanism and validate the event's authenticity, payload and job identifier. The official webhook documentation explains subscription and permission requirements.
  3. Resolve source values. Fetch the relevant Position or controlled mapping table. Confirm which system owns each value and which target code or picklist ID SmartRecruiters accepts.
  4. Read the current job. Use the Jobs API to determine whether the target attributes are already populated or have changed since the event. This supports safe retries and avoids overwriting recruiter-approved values.
  5. PATCH only approved fields. Send the specific JSON Patch operations to the supported endpoint. Avoid replacing the entire job with a broad PUT payload merely to set five fields. The PATCH API reference explains partial updates and validation behavior.
  6. Verify and reconcile. Read back the job, compare the actual values to the approved source and record success or a precise exception for support.

The API operation and a critical caveat

The supported endpoint is PATCH https://api.smartrecruiters.com/jobs/{jobId}. SmartRecruiters documents JSON Patch operations and notes that changing a field may trigger job approval, updates the modification timestamp and applies required-field and dependency validations. A technically successful HTTP response therefore does not guarantee the business workflow is unaffected. Review approval behavior before automating changes to an already approved job. Official update-a-job reference.

The SAP article illustrates JSON Patch operations for all five attributes. Treat the example values as illustrative, not production-ready constants: picklist IDs and location conventions must be validated against the target company configuration. A tenant may use predefined locations; SmartRecruiters' 21 September 2026 changelog documents support for location.identifier in job PATCH requests, including an explicit error when a configured location cannot be found.

Do not confuse standard fields with custom Position fields

This workaround solves a defined problem: enriching a SmartRecruiters job after creation when specific standard attributes cannot be populated through the available Position mapping. It does not prove that any custom SuccessFactors Position field can be written to any SmartRecruiters target field. For custom fields, first verify that a corresponding SmartRecruiters job property exists, that the value type is supported and that the field is writable through the relevant API. The SAP data-sync KBA covers related mapping concepts, while the Jobs API documents the supported update operation.

Seven controls I would add before production

  1. Correlation: Maintain a stable Position-to-Job mapping and reject ambiguous matches; a webhook's job ID alone does not identify the right source Position without a verified relationship.
  2. Idempotency: Record processed event and job identifiers. A repeated webhook must not cause unnecessary PATCH calls or repeated approvals.
  3. Eventual consistency: A newly created job or source reference may not be immediately readable. Use bounded retries with backoff, then escalate to a dead-letter queue rather than retrying indefinitely.
  4. Least privilege: Limit API credentials to the required company and job operations; secure the webhook endpoint and protect tokens in a managed secret store.
  5. Ownership rules: Define whether a later recruiter edit should win over the Position value, and whether enrichment runs only at creation or also after approved source changes.
  6. Validation: Exercise invalid picklist IDs, missing source values, changed approval status, unauthorized access and partial field updates in a non-production environment.
  7. Monitoring: Reconcile job-created events against successfully enriched jobs and alert on exceptions before recruiters discover incomplete records.

These controls are recommended architecture practices, not a claim that SAP's sample provides them automatically. SmartRecruiters documents webhook delivery and subscription mechanics in its webhook guide and update semantics in the Jobs API reference.

How to estimate effort without guessing

Before committing to a delivery date, confirm whether a middleware runtime already exists, whether webhook subscriptions and API credentials are approved, whether the five values are available from a stable source, and whether approval re-triggering is acceptable. Build a proof of concept with one Position, one SmartRecruiters job and two deliberately repeated webhook deliveries. Measure whether both executions converge on one correct job state without duplicate actions. Only then estimate mapping, testing, security and operational handover for the full landscape.

What implementation teams should do now

First, check which of the five attributes are genuinely missing in your tenant rather than applying the workaround indiscriminately. Second, inspect the current Position-to-Job mapping and source-of-truth decisions. Third, validate the API permissions and exact payload in a test tenant. Fourth, test approvals, idempotency and read-back. Finally, document which attributes remain unsupported or require a different integration. The SAP expert's original example, KBA 3746432 and SmartRecruiters API specification are the starting evidence.

Bottom line

The useful news is not that SmartRecruiters suddenly maps every Position field. It is that SAP has documented a concrete event-driven API enrichment pattern for five specific standard job attributes. For teams implementing SAP SuccessFactors and SmartRecruiters, that can remove manual job completion, but only if the integration preserves field ownership, permissions, approval behavior and reliable retry handling. Validate the exact tenant behavior before presenting the workaround as a production-ready standard connector. SAP source | SmartRecruiters source.
