Google AI Mode Ads Expand to 10 Countries: What Marketers Can Actually Control

29 October 2026 | Global AI and digital business | Phased rollout, not universal availability. The next competition for customers may happen before anyone clicks a website. On 28 October, Google announced that advertising within its conversational AI Mode is scaling to ten more countries, while ads can now appear in follow-up AI Mode questions in the United States. This is not a new campaign product that every business must purchase. Existing Google Ads campaigns can already compete for attention inside an AI search conversation. The distinction matters because visibility, measurement and control are different from conventional search. Google's official announcement and Google Ads Help explain the rollout.

The ten markets and the three that are only planned

Google names Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore as markets where ads in AI Mode are scaling. Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are planned for Q4 2026; Google has not confirmed an exact activation date for each. The United States is also launching multiturn ads, meaning sponsored results can appear in follow-up questions within an AI Mode conversation. Ads remain labeled Sponsored. Google's help documentation currently specifies English for ads within AI Mode and AI Overviews, and Pakistan is limited to text ads. Indonesia is listed for AI Overviews only, not AI Mode. The Netherlands is not among the announced AI Mode advertising markets. Launch details, 28 October; market and language eligibility.

Do not turn a rollout announcement into a claim that every campaign is already serving in every named country. Availability can depend on market, language, campaign eligibility and relevant queries. Equally, the three Q4 planned countries are not confirmed as live. Google's current availability list should be checked when planning spend.

What changes for advertisers: no new campaign is needed

Google says existing eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns automatically participate in relevant AI Overviews and AI Mode auctions. There is no separate AI Mode campaign or budget to configure. More importantly, advertisers cannot exclusively target AI Mode or separately opt out of it. Negative keywords, brand exclusions and normal campaign controls still apply, but they do not create a standalone AI Mode switch. Google says standard cost-per-click and conversion-based bidding apply without an extra fee merely for participating; this does not mean clicks are free. Official eligibility, controls and billing guidance.

This creates a governance question: your marketing team may be eligible for new conversational placements without having deliberately activated an AI-specific advertising channel. Review campaign geography, exclusions, bidding rules and conversion quality before assuming you have full control over where an ad appears. Google Ads controls.

Why the second question can be more valuable than the first

A traditional commercial search might begin with 'buy a laptop.' A conversational search could begin with 'why is my laptop overheating?' and only later become a product comparison. Google says ads can be matched directly to commercial queries or contextually to the user's query and the AI response as commercial intent emerges. Broad match, AI Max for Search, Shopping and Performance Max can qualify for contextual matching. Exact and phrase match Search keywords are eligible for direct commercial-intent queries, not the broader contextual match described in the guidance. U.S. multiturn ads extend the opportunity to follow-up questions. Google's matching explanation.

Google reports that AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, citing its U.S. May 2026 research. It also says sponsored and organic product-listing click-through rates in AI Mode are similar, based on its internal U.S. data from 20 August to 3 September 2026. These are company-reported observations, not independently verified conversion rates, revenue uplift or customer ROI. Google's study notes; TechCrunch's independent 28 October reporting.

The measurement limitation many headlines overlook

Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, clicks, costs, conversions and search terms are included in aggregate within standard Google Ads reports. The help page does not document a separate AI Mode report that isolates the channel's full conversion contribution. If campaign performance changes after the rollout, that alone does not prove the AI placements caused the difference. Seasonality, bidding, creative quality and landing-page changes can also affect results. Official reporting documentation.

Another detail: some ads may have AI-generated explainers derived from a query, AI answer and publicly available information, including your website. Advertisers cannot manually write, approve or opt out of those explainers. Google says paid advertising does not influence organic AI answers. Keep product facts, prices, availability and public business information accurate, but do not sell this update as a paid shortcut to organic AI citations. AI explainers and organic response policy.

Five actions I would take before spending more

  1. Confirm market and language eligibility. Validate where the campaign can actually serve; do not count a planned Q4 market as launched.
  2. Audit existing controls. Review Search, Shopping and Performance Max targeting, exclusions, budgets and brand-safety assumptions. There is no separate AI Mode opt-out.
  3. Fix measurement first. Verify conversion tags, consent, offline conversion imports and lead quality. Keep a baseline and avoid attributing aggregated results to AI Mode alone.
  4. Improve assets and product data. Make landing pages answer real customer questions. Keep Merchant Center titles, descriptions, images, prices, shipping and return policies accurate.
  5. Run a disciplined experiment. Record a baseline, limit simultaneous changes where possible, track qualified conversions and acquisition costs, and describe findings as directional if placements cannot be isolated.

These are recommended marketing controls, not new mandatory Google migration steps or guaranteed growth tactics. Google's own guidance emphasizes strong conversion measurement, relevant targeting, Smart Bidding and complete product feeds. Google Ads best practices.

Why the timing matters

The expansion was announced alongside Alphabet's third-quarter results. Independent reporting says Google Search advertising growth slowed while Google expanded AI search usage and overall cloud revenue. That context helps explain why Google is extending monetization into conversational search, but it does not prove AI Mode ads are profitable or unprofitable for a specific advertiser. TechCrunch, 28 October 2026.

Paid AI search is not the same as SEO or Connected Apps

Three routes should not be conflated: an organic citation in an AI-generated answer, a paid advertisement chosen through an auction, and a Connected App that performs an authorized action. Google separately launched a Connected Apps developer preview on 28 October. It is not the same mechanism as AI Mode advertising. Paying for ads does not guarantee that an AI answer cites your website or uses your application. Google's separate Connected Apps announcement; Google's organic-versus-paid clarification.

My assessment: The biggest development is not simply ten new countries. Paid search is moving into the middle of an AI conversation, while channel-level measurement remains largely aggregated. The response should be better information, stronger campaign governance and clearer conversion economics, not an automatic budget increase. The question for leaders is no longer just 'Are we visible in search?' It is 'Can customers discover, evaluate and trust our business while AI helps them decide?' That demands evidence rather than another unverified promise about AI search rankings. Official announcement | Google Ads technical guidance.
